On May 5, 1988, Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born in north London. She is the only child of her parents; Mark Evans, a Welsh, and Penny Adkins. Adele was not born with a sliver spoon in her mouth; she was singlehandedly raised by her mother. Her father, an alcohol addict, left her and her mother when she was just four years old. She grew up under her mother’s nose.
As a child, Adele’s mother did implore her to make good use of her time; she encouraged her to explore and not to put her eggs in one basket.
This gave Adele the opportunity to build her dream and made her tenacious about it.
Adele was enamored by music from her teenage age; she had penchant for the song of the likes of: Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill and Destiny child. She was exposed to the music world at age 15, when she stumbled upon a collection of Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald records at local shop.
She recounted during an interview with the telegraph in 2008 that “there was no musical heritage in our family. Chart music was all I ever knew. So when I listened to the Ettas and the Ellas; it sounds so cheesy, but it was like an awakening. I was like, oh, right, some people have proper longevity and are legends. I was so inspired that as a 15-year-old I was listening to music that had been made in the ‘40s”.
Owing to the feeble financial strength of her single mother, Adele was not privileged to attend a formal classroom setting for her education; rather, she was enrolled to the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology.
This was like a prerequisite to her career as she was exposed to the preliminary stage of entertainment; this prepared her for the future.
In 2006, while at school and being an art enhancing school, Adele had recorded a three-track demo for her class final project. She decided to post these tracks on her MySpace page, probably for safety and record purpose.
By the virtue of the versatility of the internet and social media; these tracks were her frontiers in the music industry. 4 months after her graduation at BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, the executives of XL recordings stumbled on her tracks; they had no option but to contact Adele in November 2006 and signed her to a record deal.
Adele made her debut in the music industry at the age of 19; she began the recording projects and was dishing out sonorous tracks for the populace.
Her first album, named 19, was released in early 2008; this album had two hit singles, “hometown glory” and “chasing pavements”; these two brought her to limelight as they were the hits and the trending vibes of the town. Released under the management of Columbia records, 19 got the eye of the Americans and the British; it was indeed a huge success for the newbie, Adele, in the music industry. The album, 19, got the number one spot on the iTunes ranking in less than 24 hours.
In 2009, Adele made her way to the Grammy; she carted away the 2009 best new artist Grammy award. Also, that same year, her album, 19, was named the sound of the year 2008 by the BBC. To cap all up; she received the critics’ choice prize at the BRIT awards. After getting her feet wet in the global music industry and making a laudable beginning, she began to enjoy her sojourn and released hit singles.
Just two year after her debut album, 19, she released her second album named 21, to commensurate her new age.
This album was a hit and made a huge success; it sold over 352,000 copies within it first week, it was the much anticipated hit from Adele.
The album has hit tracks like “rolling in the deep” and “someone like you”. These tracks and other tracks that made the album got warm impressions from the populace. The second album established and stabilized her status as a sensational American R&B and Jazz musician.
Her songs took the ace of all rankings, the album, 21, stayed at number one spot for every ranking for solid 11 weeks; she broke the solo female artist award previously held by Madonna. The album, 21, sold over 30 million copies worldwide; then, Adele became the cynosure of the eyes of all music lovers.
The 2012 Grammy awards was a real justification of Adele’s music career; she made away with 6 Grammy awards, including the album of the year. In an interview after the award, she disclosed the source of her inspiration, she said,
“This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone’s been through it, just a rubbish relationship”.
In 2013, her hit single “set fire to the rain” won her the seventh Grammy in the category for best pop solo performance; also in 2013, she won the a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for “Skyfall”, the theme song for the 2013 James Bond film also titled “Skyfall”.
On October 22, 2015, Adele took her instagram page to announce the official release of her third album, 25. She uploaded the cover of the album and further disclosed that it’s her first full-length studio project in several years. In her words,
“My last record was a breakup album, and if I had to label this one, I would call it a make-up record. Making up for lost time; making up for everything I ever did and never did. 25 is about getting to know who I’ve become without realizing. And am sorry it took so long but, you know, life happened.”
The following day, precisely October 23, 2015; Adele released the slow romantic hit single, Hello. An epic and outstanding track that explicitly showcase her sonorous voice. Hello made the No.1 on billboard’s pop charts, making Adele’s fourth chart-topper and making history as the first single to receive more than one million downloads within a week. What a massive record, she made. The song retained the No.1 spot for multiple weeks in various rating in the US and UK. The album, 25, was released in November 2015; the album contained emotional songs, looking into the nook and cranny of relationships. The album made a huge successful in the global music industry; it held the No.1spot on iTunes in 110 countries. The sale was massive; it sold over 3.38 million copies within 7 days in U.S., the album is the only album to reach a million copies in the UK within 20 days. Adele won numerous awards, especially the Grammy awards; she became the first artist in Grammy history to cart away top three categories twice in 2012 and 2017.
On June 29, 2012, Adele gave inkling about her relationship with Simon Konecki; she used the medium to announce that she was pregnant. She gave birth to her son on October 19, 2012; she gleefully expressed her love for boys as he told the People magazine, she said
“I really want to be a mum. I better start getting on with it!” She further disclosed that she wants to have a trio of boys by the time she clocks 30.
Presently, Adele is one of the top female musicians in the world; with three albums, she has been able to dazzle the world and make good from her talent. Success consists of many failures; it is always achieved outside one’s comfort zone.
