The Spirit Within and the Spirit Upon – Kenneth Hagin

The Spirit within and the Spirit upon. This is one of the most powerful books I have read of Kenneth E. Hagin and I believe should be read by every believer in the school of the Spirit.

This book brings us to understanding of the workings of the spirit in the life of a believer. He brought us to the light of the dual working of the Holy Spirit.

This book is divided into 13 powerful chapters which takes us deeper in the knowledge of the workings of the Spirit.

The first chapter speaks in the dual workings of the Spirit in the life of a believer, ‘’The Dual Working of the Holy Spirit’’. He Illustrated this workings as the water in the well and the water in the river.

Jesus speaking in John 14:16-31 about the Holy Spirit that will dwell within us, ‘’ Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it sees him not, neither knows him: but ye know him; for he dwells with you, and shall be in you”. V.17. and also in Acts 1:8, Jesus spoke about the Spirit that will dwell upon “But ye shall receive power, after the Holy Spirit is come upon you”.

Therefore bringing to light to light that the spirit dwells both in and upon a believer.

He also made us understand the works of the spirit within as the carrier of the fruit of the Spirit, that work in the life of a believer o fulfil righteousness and the gifts of the Spirit which is a working of the Spirit upon the Believer which is for service.

The second chapter he spoke about the Spirit within at new birth, titled “The Spirit Within: The Holy Spirit In The New Birth”. He made us understand that at new birth the Spirit of God begins to dwell in us, which is different from the baptism of the Spirit. He made us understand from Romans 8:9”…if so be any man having not the Spirit of Christ, He is none of His” that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of adoption. He also gave us three keys on how to cooperate with the indwelling Spirit, which were

    1. Constant renewal of Spirit
    2. Walking in the Spirit
    3. Understanding the ways of the Spirit

In the remaining part of this chapter he went on to explain constant renewal of the Spirit.

A buoyant spirit of joy and praise is a result of staying continually filled up with the Holy Spirit. Isaiah 40:31

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint”.  Waiting on the Lord in prayers renews or spirit and keeps us ever joyful.

The next chapter (the third chapter) he shed more light on walking in the Spirit, the second key on how to cooperate with the Spirit.

Many have become so heavenly minded and are no earthly good. God is as well concerned about God is as well concerned about our heavenly life as much as He is concerning our earthly life.

1 Timothy 4:8 For bodily exercise profits little: but godliness id profitable to all things, having promise of the life that Now is, And of that which is to come. He made understand the place of the leading of the Holy Spirit in our day to day life. He urged us not to ignore the leading of the Spirit for as important as the word of God is to this Generation, so is the leading of the Spirit, he also shared with us a striking experience in this book.

The fourth chapter, walking in the Spirit is walking in love

He spoke in this chapter on the importance of walking in Love. Galatians 5:16 That I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. And in V.22-23 scriptures states the fruits of the Spirit, and the first was Love. Love is the first fruit of the Spirit and is the first evidence of walking in The Spirit, v25, Paul said if we live in the Spirit: let us also walk in the Spirit. He goes on to explain in this chapter about Love, he shared some life encounters, if you want learn more about love, you must not miss this chapter.

The fifth chapter: Love Is The Best Way

This is rather my best chapter in this book as he opened us to love and it’s characteristics. He created a Love Thermometer from 1Cor 13:5 “… it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it (it pays no attention to a suffered wrong.”. He calls this verse the love gauge and with this verse we can find out whether we are working in love or walking in the Spirit. When we take account of the evil done to s, we’re not walking in love. Nothing is so beautiful as walking in over, Love can do it, Faith is authenticated in Love, we best believe in love. Love remains the greatest virtue in the universe.

The Sixth Chapter; Suffering Unto Perfection

here he emphasized on the third key which is the way of the Spirit. For as the heavens are higher than the Heavens so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isa55:9

The ways of the Spirit are far higher than ours and we give in to the workings of the Spirit in our life. One of the working suffering unto perfection, in Hebrews 5:8-9 “ though he were a son, yet learned by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. If Jesus had to suffer to attain perfection how much more we Christians? Now , he explained the kinds of sufferings we are to face, so as not to misunderstand and become prey to the devil. We are not permitted to suffer sickness, for Christ had paid that price, neither are we to suffer poverty for Christ had paid that price. The suffering here are the suffering of the workings of the Spirit, the school of endurance, the shame of witnessing, the suffering of giving ourselves to fasting and prayers all were extensively discussed in the book.

Chapter Seven: The Supernatural Call

here he explored the workings of the Spirit in a course to build our spiritual muscles. He wrote on some of his life experiences which the Spirit led him to practically face challenges; he said “some of the biggest trails he ever had to face were as a result of pasturing the churches where the Holy Spirit led him to function as a pastor in them!”

This chapter featured a sub topic Great Faith Comes Out of Great Tests. Great faith doesn’t come by just reading, hearing, or feeding on the world, only the potential for Great faith does come by that, Great Faith come when you put what you heard to practice.

Chapter Eight: Holy Spirit Adventures

Here he began to look at the Spirit Upon the believer; Here He also stated the differences between the Spirit Upon and The Spirit Within a believer. He mentioned the difference between the leading of the Spirit within and the gift of the word of knowledge.

Chapter Nine: A Deeper Dimension

Being baptized in the Holy Spirit brings you to a deeper dimension of the Spirit. Being baptized with Spirit is one way to enter into the fullness of God. Being baptized with Spirit give you power for service Acts 1:8.

Chapter Ten: Witnessing to your immediate family about the baptism in the Holy Spirit

One trait of every man after he or she had learned something new is to go and tell others about it, and in this kingdom it our calling to witness to every man the wondrous works of God. But witness to your family may by really difficult.

Hagin brought us to this light in this chapter that you may not necessarily have to speak in the first instance but you live the life of what you have gotten and let other see just the differences in you, they will naturally ask you what you have.
When baptized with the Spirit your service would change because the Spirit empowers for service. He shared extensively on the manifestation of the Spirit upon a believer with references to the apostles at the mountain of endurement .

He explained on the manifestation of speaking in tongues which has been the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost all through scriptures.

Chapter Eleven: The Dwelling Place Of The Spirit

In this chapter, he wrote expressly on the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, He explained the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit in our temple individually, he shed a light on 2 Corinthians 6:14-16 and also shared a deep revelation on Jesus’ last statement on the cross “It Is Finished”

Chapter Twelve: The church as the temple of the Holy Spirit

He wrote in this chapter the working of the Holy Spirit in the church as a whole. The Holy Spirit dwells in our individual lives and also collectively with the saint as a whole. He wrote on the cooperate anointing which is a working of the Spirit in the midst of the saint and also spoke on several manifestations of the Spirit in the church as a whole.

Chapter Thirteen: God inhabits the praises of his people

On several instance in this book Hagin always mentioned he danced. I believe he was a powerful praiser. He loved to dance; he must have understood the importance of praises offered to God. God inhabits the praises of His people. When Gods people praise God dwells there. Hagin in this chapter wrote deep insights on praise and the manifestation of God in the praises of His people.

This book is highly recommended for ministers of God, praises leaders, pastors and all saints. Lay your hands on this book; you will never remain the same.
